Frequently Asked Questions

What's the weather like in Massa Marittima?

Massa Marittima is blessed with a mild climate thanks to its proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea.  Except for the occasional cold burst, winters are generally in the 40s and 50s F and, more often than not, the Mediterranean sun peaks out enough to warm the soul!  Spring is the "rainy season", even if the rain is sporadic and sunny days outnumber the rainy ones by a long shot.  Summer is warm and sunny--there are generally only about 2 weeks of extreme heat.  Most summer evenings require a light jacket thanks to our fresh, sea breezes that arrive to our hilltop town.  The first half of Fall is an extension of Summer with warm days and chillier nights.  The second half of Fall can bring some storms but is generally mild.

Do I need to rent a car?

Depends!

The nearest train station to Massa Marittima is about a 20 minute drive to the seaside town of Follonica.  If you haven't rented a car, you can take a bus or hire a private driver to reach us.  If you are here for just a short stay, and your focus is on our town itself, then you may decide to forgo the car.  If, instead, you intend to explore the Tuscan countryside, including wineries, beaches, and hot springs, then I recommend renting your own car and maintaining your independence.  For more information, see our How to Reach Us page.
