FEAST OF SAN ANTONIO ABATE

January 17

The Feast of Sant'Antonio Abbate is a revered celebration within agricultural communities like that of Massa Marittima.  Each year on January 17, a solemn mass is said in commemoration of the patron saint of animals in the Cathedral of Massa Marittima, followed by a blessing of the animals in the piazza.  Townspeople and farmers of the Comune bring their dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, donkeys, and falcons for an official blessing!  It is an endearing celebration and so much fun to see the town come alive with so many beloved animals.
